What was your dream at the beginning of your publishing adventure and what has changed since then? The publishing house was officially registered at the Court of Rome in 1970, although the first fanzines began to circulate unofficially as early as 1968; therefore the publishing house was born in the midst of the 1968 climate, in the wake of the youth protest that had already been active in the United States for a few years and precisely on the model of the American "Alternative Press" Stampa Alternativa was born. The intent was to provide counter-information on the most disparate topics: from abortion to conscientious objection, from the rights of minors to the legalization of soft drugs. The editorial director Marcello Baraghini has collected 137 criminal proceedings, all for crimes of opinion.
Now, many of those battles have become laws but the publishing house continues to provide counter-information both through investigative essays, social novels and by rediscovering forgotten or inconvenient literary classics. It is no coincidence that our flagship series is called "Heretica" and aims to shake people's minds towards free and prejudice-free thinking. An objective judgment on Italian publishing: what Special Data future does it have and how will it have to evolve to remain active? Today, more than ever, Italian publishing has the appearance of a dying animal. Except for some independent and still alive realities, market logic is irreversibly crushing cultural research.
This is what happens in the paper market, where bookshops find themselves with pallets full of volumes by Totti, Parodi, Faletti etc. There is a media dictatorship that supports and endorses that of marketing. The only escape route to all this can be represented by the internet, which has the advantage of being able to restore the logic of merit and quality. How do you establish a dialogue with your readers? Do you consider it sufficient? We have a long-standing dialogue with many of our readers, as the publishing house has existed for more than forty years, through our website and blog we try to keep this bond alive, now we are also trying to interact through Facebook which, as we said before, it can be a great resource for understanding and communicating with real readers and not just those "domesticated" by the media and large book chains.
